Computing Acceptable Use

While using the network it is important that all the users follow certain guidelines for legal use. At the same time we need to ensure that our users are protected from harm due to others activities.

For the convenience of the students, there is a computer lab located in each residence hall that is open the same hours as the main desk (Scott Hall, Taylor Hall and Donner Hall are open 7:00am – midnight). The computer labs are equipped with desktop personal computers both pc and mac. Each computer lab is equipped with laser printing free of charge up to 20 pages both sides. The computers are equipped with the latest office productivity software.

The students must abide by the following rules:

  • Labs cannot be used when the front desk is not open.

  • Proper key check out procedures must be utilized.  This includes the access controlled labs (Scott Hall, Donner Hall, and Taylor Hall).  It is unacceptable to share access to anyone  that is not a resident of that Hall.

  • Excessive printing (more than 20 pages, excessive copies, etc.) is prohibited.

  • During times when use of the computer lab is high (i.e., mid–terms, finals) the staff may limit available time on the computer.

  • Academic research takes priority over personal work (emails, “surfing”, facebook, etc.).

  • Only hall residents will be allowed to use computer lab resources.

  • Viewing or displaying adult material will not be tolerated.

  • Using computer lab resources to download, display, and transfer unauthorized copyrighted material will not be allowed.

  • Eating, drinking, and the use of tobacco in the computer labs is strictly prohibited.

Personal computers in student rooms

If a student has a computer in his or her room and is a ResNet user he or she will be responsible for abiding by the policies listed below, as well as the general UW Oshkosh computing policies.

Network User Policy

Our department’s Management Information Office (MIO) provides network connectivity service to residents and special guests.

The purpose of this policy is to outline the conditions of this service and the responsibilities of the users while connected to the computer network. All users are expected to adhere to this policy.  By accessing the system you agree to comply with and be subject to this policy.

Terms of Use

The following policy statements are intended to augment, not supersede, any additional contractual agreements of conduct or confidentiality to which you may be subject. You will be responsible for abiding by the policies listed below as well as the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh's Acceptable Use of Computing Resources policy. The Department of Residence Life reserves the right to amend this policy at any time with or without notice. Questions or comments regarding this document should be addressed to the Residence Life Management Information Office (MIO).

  • You are responsible for taking steps to avoid being either the victim or perpetrator of computer viruses.  Devices which are found to be infected with a computer virus will be disconnected.

  • Abuse of network resources will not be tolerated. This includes any activities that are considered detrimental to the network or cause excessive traffic.

  • You are responsible for all activities conducted through the use of your network connection. This includes actions taken by guests or others that have access to your computer or connect their computer to your data jack. It is recommended that you take suitable precautions such as restricting access to your computer by setting up a complex password and if you are connected through a wired connection, only allowing trusted users to plug into your data jack.

  • You may not run server services on your computer while connected to the network. This includes, but is not limited to “peer–to–peer” applications, web servers, FTP servers, dial–in (such as PPP and SLIP) access, and/or any system or service that allows a user to access the network via your connection.

  • No routers are allowed on the residential network.  This includes wireless routers.  Personal wireless routers interfere with the campus’ wireless network. Hubs/switches will be available for those that have two roommates needing an internet connection.

  • No user or group should disrupt or interfere with the legitimate access to the network of another user. Also, the network should not be used to harass others. This includes, but is not limited to the use of anonymous and/or forged electronic mail and/or messages.

  • No illegal activity is permitted.

  • You are not permitted to enter any computer system or access any files stored on a computer system without the expressed permission of the owner of the files and/or the computer system.

  • The only software the Management Information Office (MIO) will support is the software it provides you (antivirus).

  • Any other software will be solely your responsibility.

  •  Hardware installation and problems will be solely your responsibility. You are also responsible for backing up your computer data files.

  • As effective as encryption technology is, no security system is impenetrable. We cannot guarantee the information you send or receive will not be intercepted while being transmitted over the internet. Most web browsers allow use of a Secure Socket Layer (“SSL”) connection. The Department of Residence Life and the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh are not responsible for personal information that is transferred while using the network. This includes, but is not limited to, the loss of credit card information, social security number, driver’s license information, and bank account information.

  • If you experience problems with your network connection, it is your responsibility to notify the Residence Life Management Information Office (MIO).

  • Network connectivity may be temporarily suspended at any time for network related problems or violation of policy.
